In the framework of the 2017-2018 Ganshof van der Meersch Chair
, Sanjeev Goyal, Professor of Economics and Fellow of Christ's College at the University Cambridge delivered a talk aimed at the general public entitled "Integration and Diversity"
. He was welcomed by Professors Patrick Legros and André Sapir from the European Center of Advanced Research in Economics and Statistics (ECARES).In a liberal society, diversity in norms, values, and modes of behaviour is greatly valued. But in contemporary European politics, diversity is also increasingly seen as a major challenge. In the domains of food, dress, language, education, occupation, and religious belief, the rewards from an action depend on what others - especially those close to us - choose. Group identity creates differing expectations on the preferred course of action. How do individuals navigate their way through the claims of group identity and the pressures of conformism? What are the implications for social cohesion?
The lecture took place on Monday 23 April at 6pm
in Room Spaak at the Institute of European Studies (IEE), ULB, Avenue F.D. Roosevelt 39,1050 Bruxelles – see map
). The lecture was followed by a reception.
